Sharing Means Caring

True Scenario: This morning while brushing my teeth and Ryan is standing in the door:

Ryan: Hey that's my toothbrush
Me: No it isn't. Mine is the turquoise one and yours is blue
Ryan: No, I distinctly remember when I bought them (circa a month or so ago) you said you wanted the blue one and I thought that was weird bc it is a boy color
Me: No, I distinctly remember choosing the turquoise one bc blue is a boy color.

Conclusion: We've been using the same tooth brush for over a month. What's odd to me is that I guess we have never brushed our teeth at the same time in over a month. I don't know why this is disgusting to me. We've shared toothbrushes before, but that was on purpose. I guess bc it was accidental it disgusts me or because my throat is closed up this morning and I feel sick and I want to blame the toothbrush thing but I don't think that's logical. It's more apt to be that I have no immune system.

Solution: Buy distinct pink and blue toothbrushes and stick to socially predetermined gender colors to avoid future confusions.

Speaking from experience: It is possible in a "mature" relationship to use blue and turqoise toothbrushes without getting them confused (the owner of the blue toothbrush)!

kira said...

or remember you refuse to be "normal" and make sure ry uses a pink toothbrush from now on

lauren and brad said...

brad and i have totally done that! :)

not to gross you out, but when we travel, we only pack one toothbrush. you know, to save space...bc toothbrushes take up an entire section in the suitcase. :)

Dad and I have been married for 31 years and long ago decided that sharing a toothbrush (intentionally or accidentally) is all part of the "becoming one". It's always smart to throw away your toothbrush and start with a new one after being sick. Guess you can just throw away the blue one and both use the turquoise one since it sounds like neither one of you has used it yet.

Mom I said...

Oops, I mean you should toss the turquoise one because you've both been using that one. Mom I

So,when I say this remember that I was an oral pharmaceutical rep for awhile. . . sharing a toothbrush TOTALLY grosses me out too! If people knew what I know I think they'd insist on having their own toothbrush, but more power to them if they're okay with sharing. I'd definitely get the pinkest toothbrush possible, go for a barbie one or something so there's no confusing it with Ryan's Bob the Builder one! Love you! Wendy.

y'all are awesome. when we lost our luggage on a trip we had to buy toothbrushes, but we were too cheap to get 2, so we totally shared the $6 airport toothbrush :)

What a laugh!!! Accidents happen and this is probably a common one for married couples.

Hubby and I never shared a toothbrush, not even on accident, the thought makes me gag!! But kuddos to you :)

Oh my, that would make me feel a bit bleh too but hey, it's your husband and not some random roommate at least, right? Which is what happened to a friend of mine....*shiver* I won't continue, you're pregnant, you might come and get me. ;O)

Recently my oldest 2 kids (both in their teens) discovered they had been using the same toothbrush. The look on their faces was priceless! I think it might be yuckier for brothers and sisters to use the same toothbrush than for married people. Gotta love living in close quarters!

I have the same reaction if I use my husband's or one of my girls' toothbrushes by accident. YUCK!

Oddly enough my husband and I have blue and turquoise and I too grabbed the wrong one TWICE recently and it grossed me out. This always sends my husband into a "we kiss each other, etc., etc., why does that gross you out?" I JUST DOES!

Very funny post!

meandtheblueskies said...

It's funny how we react to things like that. Do you ever eat off of the same utensil that your husband is using? or drink from the same glass? Do you put your tongue in his mouth when you kiss him? Then what's the difference with a toothbrush? Kinda funny though. Happy SITS day!

Astrid said...

OMG! That's too funny! I've been married 14 years and still haven't shared my husband's toothbrush. I don't intend to either!

Happy SITS day!

LOL! I agree. I buy color-coded toothbrushes just so my DH will not use mine...perish the thought. Funny how I'll let him put his tongue down my throat, but I will throw away my toothbrush if he uses it. Can't explain it.
HAPPY SITS DAY!

Hilarious! I love it. You could always get purple (it's still kind of a girly color) that way you are stuck with pink. Not that there's anything wrong with pink, but a girl needs options. ;)

Thats hilarious, and so something I would freak out over as well! My BF calls me a germ freak all the time, we have shared in the past but I completely agree different when it is planned! :)

This is so funny! Believe it or not, this has happened more than once in my house. We went a few weeks before realizing we were using the same toothbrush. I made him move to another bathroom.

LOL My husband and I have shared a toothbrush on purpose, but never by accident (as far as I know!). It's funny, it shouldn't bother us, since we share drink glasses and kiss anyway!

Funny, I love kissing my husband, but the thought of sharing a toothbrush just makes my skin crawl. It is so gross to me! I don't get it either.

Anita said...

stopping by from sits, and laughing! I don't like to share a toothbrush either...gag.

Mel said...

I'm cracking up over here! My fiancé offered me his toothbrush about a week ago when I slept over at his house, but since I live less than a block away, I opted to go home without brushing first, just so I could use my own! He thought it was weird since we kiss and eat from the same fork, but I didn't care, there is just someplace where I have to draw the line!!

Amy said...

I am funny about stuff like that, I'd probably have gagged!

Jessica said...

I think there's a suspension of disbelief of cooties whenever anyone picks up their toothbrush... I mean, it was in your mouth and then just briskly rinsed and put back in its holder. It's definitely not sanitary by any means. Now you've discovered you've been putting someone ELSE'S unsanitary toothbrush in your mouth for a month! I'm so with you - I'd want to gargle for a week!

My kids sometimes do that. They'll argue over which toothbrush is who's. I'm like, don't worry about. New toothbrushes for everyone! Your story is too funny.

Heather said...

I'm sorry, but this made me laugh!! :) I'm surprised this hasn't happened to us yet, we both have the exact same electric toothbrush.

hicksgirl93 said...

Yeah unfortunately in my house, this has happened on more than one occasion. Usually my children are the culprits! If they cant find their tooth brush they just conveniently start using mine, I never know until a few days later. It always ends up with a trip to the Walmart for new brushes!

This has happened to us too! It was quite a shock!

Okay, I was just thinking about that this morning when I went to brush my teeth and my brush was wet. We use sonic care and his has a little grey ring, and mine is lavendar.
So I was grossed out and thinking why? I love kissing him, I have his children, I lick his ice cream cone. Why is it so gross to use his toothbrush? Well, it just is.

Mommy of M's said...

I will only use a pink or purple toothbrush, Hubby only uses blue!! The dentist gave me a yellow one last time I was there, I handed it back to her and told her I couldn't take it, it had to be pink!

AGREED!!! My only problem is that my husband is colorblind. No not black and white. In fact he can see all the colrs just gets his blu purple and green confused when they are really colse to the same color...like dark purple and navy anyway I once bought a purple one for me and a blue one for him...Mass Confusion!!! lol

Sarah Jensen said...

Hi, from SITS

LOL! My toothbrush is hot pink. Hubby's is turquoise. Hubby still uses mine. He says, "I thought yours was blue."

Yes, two toothbrushes ago. This pack had pink and turquoise, so I figured I'd let him have the more boy one.

Oh well. I'm not pregnant, so it doesn't bother me so much. But it did when I was pregnant. Every thing that could be disgusting was.

I have done that when I can't find mine. I have wanted to brush the toilet with his when i was in extreame provocation, but I remember allways that I need an emergency one. He refuses to use mine so I wonder if he has cleaned the toilet lately...

SugarandSpice said...

HAHAHAHALOLOLOLOL!!!! I have totally done that before. A couple times in the morning when I was still 1/2 asleep my husband has come in and asked why I'm using his toothbrush? Not realizing I even was! I hope you enjoy your day in the sun!!!

Mama Kat said...

Ewwwww....I love my husband and all. And I suppose I'd make out with him if he really really wanted me to. But man it would gross me out if I found out we were sharing the same tooth brush!

Jeannie Finelli, RN said...

Willingly sharing a toothbrush is a level of intimacy I've never achieved.

a_healthier_me said...

There's just something gross about sharing an object designed to scrub plaque, old food, and other grossness from someones teeth. SO not the same as kissing!

Happy SITS day!

Gigi said...

Oh my gosh. About a month ago I schlepped myself into the bathroom, sleepily placed toothpaste on the toothbrush, and proceeded to shove the toothbrush around in my mouth. Almost immediately I thought, "now this doesn't feel right". I realized it was Beloved's toothbrush. Now, we've been married for nearly 12 years, so you'd think it'd be ok.

No, it totally made me cringe.

And that was BEFORE I found out he has been kissing SOMEONE ELSE with that mouth of his.

Now it REALLY grosses me out.
